Principle
UV light radiates at shorter wavelengths than visible light and cannot be seen by the human eye. However, when UV light is absorbed by certain materials, it is reflected back as longer wavelength visible radiation, or visible light. This phenomenon is referred to as UV-induced visible fluorescence. So, using the fluorescence characteristics and intensity that occur when certain substance molecules are exposed to light, quantitative analysis can be conducted on the substance.
SO2 molecules absorb UV light at the wavelength of 200nm~220nm. The absorbed UV energy excites the outer electrons to the next state. The excited electrons then return to the original state and emit photons at the wavelength of 240nm~420nm. Within a certain concentration range, the SO2 concentration is directly proportional to the fluorescence intensity.
